I'm a painter and occasional print-maker, working out of a little studio in Brighton in a heroic tower-block studio halfway between the sea and the south downs. I founded the Brighton Life Drawing Sessions in 2009, which became Draw in 2011 and I remain head tutor there; I'm also creative director of the Drawing Circus. I made all of these titles up myself, but I try to justify them by busying myself organizing, teaching, drawing and painting.
My teaching work focuses on making drawing accessible to everybody, on the understanding that everybody with the will to draw has the capacity to learn to draw and anybody that can draw can always learn to draw better. I started Draw to provide flexible and affordable figure drawing; the Drawing Circus serves to delight and intrigue, to be the spark of inspiration that lights the fire of learning. The Drawing Circus grew out of the wonderful band of artists, makers, models and musicians that Draw attracts and continues to evolve well beyond my input.
I draw and paint to understand the world a little better, I'm not sure if I'm getting anywhere with that, but it's rather good fun. You can see a short film about my work here courtesy of filmmaker and storyteller Nic De Jesus.
